12/28: March in Support of Gaza NYC
[by: spiegelslust] A group of Chasidic Jews led the pack Sunday from Rockefeller Center to the Israeli consulate. The Neturei Karta group, among others, claims there no religious nor moral grounds for a Jewish sovereignty over the Holy Land, and ask for it to be returned to the Palestinians. They name Zionists as "heretics". Following marched two and a half blocks of people, chanting. Slogans were pro-Palestine ("Viva, viva, Palestina"), against Israel and pro-Israeli US government policy ("Down, down, George Bush"), and opposed to military occupation ("From Iraq to Palestine, Occupation is a Crime"). The most emotional chants, however, were aimed at the city which catalyzed this demonstration ("Gaza, Gaza, Don't you Cry, Palestine will never Die"). The people had gathered in response to the bombing of the already-stricken city. Although temporarily delayed on Fifth Avenue before being allowed to continue to the consulate, the protest was largely unmarred by police interference. There was a mild altercation between officers and some of the more extreme demonstrators- some of those holding signs that showed mushroom clouds and phrases like "Kill all the Juice". The day was mostly peaceful, with a surprising number of children and youth marching. A few camera from television news stations covered the event. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvY_HQNX3wA
